Water and Electrolytes

Posted by Blog Saturday, March 5, 2011

We need a constant supply of drinking water for many purposes. We can only survive a few days without water. Water and minerals work together to regulate body fluids. Water is used to transport nutrients and wastes throughout the body. Water acts as a cushion and lubricant in joints and in the eyes. Water is needed to regulate body temperature. Water is important in maintaining normal blood pressure and blood volume. Water balance is crucial for these and other functions. Water balance is influenced by certain water-soluble minerals.

Water’s Functions

A solvent and transporter for many vitamins and minerals.

A cushion and lubricant for joints, eyes, spinal cord, and the amniotic sac.

Used to cool the body.

Needed for blood volume and cellular structure.

Cleans the body of wastes.

About 60 percent of the body weight of adults is comprised of water. Although it may seem that fat is more watery, it turns out that lean tissue contains more water. Lean tissue contains three-quarters water, while fat contains about onequarter water.
