ZINC LOZENGES

Posted by Blog Sunday, March 27, 2011

Many people use zinc lozenges to treat cold symptoms. There are still questions about the effectiveness of these lozenges. Zinc intakes well above the tolerable upper intake level (UL) can result from frequent use of zinc lozenges. Shortterm use of zinc lozenges has not been found to cause problems from excesses of zinc.

However, frequent use of zinc lozenges for over six weeks can result in copper deficiency. Use of zinc sprays in the nose has the potential to cause loss of smell. Since this type of loss of smell is permanent, nasal zinc sprays and gels should be avoided.
